Still time to apply for Sligo’s Got Talent

THERE is just over one week left for artistic Sligo folk to get involved in the county’s biggest talent contest.

There has already been a huge response to Sligo’s Got Talent, organised by the Garavogue bar in conjunction with the Sligo Post, with people aged between 18 and 80 set to take the stage.
With a whopping cash prize of €10,000 no wonder interest is so high but there is still time to get your application in as the deadline for the competition is next Thursday, September 17, when the first round of heats begin at the Garavogue.

During the heats members of the audience will be involved in choosing the winner and the heats will last 10 weeks.

Judges will be Sligo Post Editor Teresa McGowan and i102104 DJ Mark Cunning. Teresa McGowan began her career in journalism at Hot Press magazine when she was 19.

Since then she has worked in local newspapers across the country in her native Derry, Donegal, Monaghan, Cavan and as far away as Liverpool.

She has a keen interest in music and is looking forward to judging the event: “I think this will be a great competition and I’m looking forward to seeing what Sligo has to offer.

“If you go into any pub in Sligo you’ll hear great live music any day of the week so it is evident that there are a lot of talented musicians around.

“People should get their applications in now because the prize money is fantastic and it not just about music. I’d love to see something completely different,” she said.

Mark Cunning fell into radio in 2001 when he joined Q97.2fm as a weekend and cover presenter. He then went on to establishing himself in Northern Ireland as a well known club DJ and, much earlier than expected, he got “that call” from Northern Ireland’s Cool FM where along with a lot of other stuff Mark presented The Z, a highly acclaimed indie/rock show.

Then Mark got another call, this time from new regional radio station i102104 and after an extremely satisfying first six months on air at i the decision was made to move Mark to iWork in the morning where he battles the likes of Gerry Ryan and Ray D’Arcy on a daily basis.
